  1. Curtain down!

That's it for the live page today, and what a mix of a day for the acting profession - from the annual whirlwind of the Oscar nominations to the sad news of the death of one of Britain's best-loved actors, Alan Rickman.

  2. DiCaprio: It's a wonderful thing

    Will Gompertz

    BBC Arts Editor

Leonardo DiCaprio is fortuitously in London today for the red carpet premiere of The Revenant.

The star said the film's success was "incredibly surprising" and that it "feels great to have this number of nominations" for something to which he and director Alejandro G Inarritu had devoted so much time.

Asked what an Oscar win would mean to him, he said: "Of course, you want to be recognised by your peers. It's a wonderful thing.

"But if I'm being very honest, you don't do it for those reasons. You really do it to make a great piece of art that some day you can look back on."

He added: "It's always this strange experience when people start talking about awards because it's something that's beyond your control. All you have control over is what you do on that day and your devotion and what you give to the movie, and I can for sure say there's nothing I didn't do as far as my commitment to this movie."

  3. 'Sing the theme tune'

We thought you might like to hear the full versions of those songs nominated for this year's Oscars.

Canadian singer The Weeknd muscled out Ellie Goulding's Love Me Like You Do, to pick up a surprise song nomination for  Earned It - also from the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack.

There were the anticipated nominations for Youth's Simple Song #3 and Lady Gaga's Til It Happens to You. And Britain's Sam Smith and Jimmy Napes will be hoping to bag another gong following their Golden Globe win, for Spectre's Writing's on the Wall.

The surprise entry was Manta Ray, from the film Racing Extinction, performed by Antony Hegarty, from Antony and the Johnsons.

  4. 45 Years success

    Charlotte Rampling

Charlotte Rampling was overlooked by Bafta voters but secured the coveted best actress nomination for the very British drama 45 Years.

Directed by Andrew Haigh, it's based on a short story by David Constantine.

The publishers of the short story collection, In Another Country, are understandably delighted at the film's success.

Quote Message: This nomination demonstrates not only the power of the short story - in the hands of great writers like David Constantine - but also the importance of investing in small projects, and grass-roots arts. Andrew's been developing this project himself for over 6 years. Sometimes you just have to take your time with these things. It's a different kind of film to almost anything else that comes out of the Hollywood system. It's arresting, disturbing, explosive... but all in a very quiet, subtle way. The ending is nothing like anything you normally find in a big budget drama: ambiguous, haunting, it makes you revise your entire opinion of the film the moment the credits start to roll. It haunts you for days. It also shows the potential power and magnitude of stories lying underneath even the most ordinary seeming relationships. from Ra Page CEO and founder of Comma Press

We chatted to Charlotte Rampling and her co-star Tom Courtenay about their experiences working on the film.

  5. Short film recognition

The short film categories often get overlooked in all fuss over the feature films, but for the filmmakers behind them, an Oscar nomination can change the course of their career.

And quite rightly they are delighted at the recognition their film and creative teams are getting.

    Shok
Quote Message: Being nominated for an Oscar is an incredible experience. It is fantastic for the cast, crew and most importantly the people of Kosovo as this is the first time country has ever been nominated. We look forward to representing Shok in LA! from Jamie Donoughue Director - Shok

    Benjamin Cleary
Quote Message: We're over the moon with the news. Never in our wildest dreams did we think Stutterer would get anywhere near this far, so it's a lovely feeling and a great honour. So many talented people took a risk jumping on board with a first time director and to every one of them, I say a massive thank you. from Benjamin Cleary Writer/director - Stutterer

  6. Carell 'proud' of Big Short success

Steve Carell, who stars in the black comedy The Big Short, tweeted his congratulations to his colleagues and co-stars.

The film, about the Wall Street crash of 2008, won a best picture nomination, as well as plaudits for director Adam McKay, actor Christian Bale (in the supporting category), adapted screenplay and film editing.

  7. Biggest upsets in Oscar history

    Citizen Kane

Todd Haynes' Carol is probably the biggest surprise omission from this year's nominations, having been tipped by many critics as one of 2015's best films.

BBC Culture have been looking at the 10 biggest upsets in Oscar history, including Citizen Kane missing out on best picture in 1941.

  8. Sam Smith does 'The Scream' face

Singer Sam Smith has posted a picture of what he dubs "my Oscar Nomination face".

"Unreal. Freaking out. Thank you Academy - Thank You, Thank You, Thank You," he wrote.

  9. Room's recognition

Captivity drama Room landed four nominations - including best actress for Brie Larson and best adapted screenplay for Canadian/Irish writer Emma Donoghue - who wrote the original bestseller.

Both were clearly delighted by the news.

Room's Irish director, Lenny Abrahamson - best known for 2014 comedy Frank - also earned his first Oscar nomination in the directing category - outdoing both Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg.

  10. Stallone 'humbled' by nomination

Nearly 40 years after he was nominated for his first Oscar in the same role, and days after he won his first Golden Globe, Sylvester Stallone looks set to be this year's comeback king for his supporting role in Rocky sequel Creed, opposite Michael B Jordan.

Quote Message: I am incredibly humbled by this honour. I was not expecting it ... especially at this time in my life. I am certainly grateful to the artists and collaborators who helped make it possible. from Sylvester Stallone

  11. The Revenant's Inarritu plans celebration drink

    Alejandro G Inarritu

Hot off the success of the Golden Globes, and with last year's Oscars barely gathering dust on the mantelpiece, Mexican director Alejandro G Inarritu has thanked the Academy for The Revenant's massive 12-strong haul of nominations. And is probably reinforcing that mantlepiece...

Quote Message: We gave it our all on this film and this appreciation from the Academy means a lot to me and my colleagues who made it possible. Champagne and mezcal will run tonight!'
  12. Rickman was 'incredibly generous and humble'

Alan Rickman was the president of the International Performer's Aid Trust - a charity that alleviates poverty in some of the world’s toughest conditions.

Elizabeth Pfeuti was the chief executive officer of the charity up until a few weeks ago, and worked closely with Alan last year.

She told 5 live’s Afternoon Edition the actor was “incredibly generous, also very kind and supportive".

  13. Emma Thompson pays tribute to Rickman

    Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson

Tributes to Alan Rickman have been pouring in, with his colleagues expressing their sadness at his passing.

Emma Thompson starred opposite him in a number of films including Love Actually and Sense and Sensibility, for which she wrote the screenplay.

Quote Message: Alan was my friend and so this is hard to write because I have just kissed him goodbye. What I remember most in this moment of painful leave-taking is his humour, intelligence, wisdom and kindness. His capacity to fell you with a look or lift you with a word. The intransigence which made him the great artist he was – his ineffable and cynical wit, the clarity with which he saw most things, including me, and the fact that he never spared me the view.

She also wrote about the experience of working alongside her friend.

Quote Message: I learned a lot from him. He was the finest of actors and directors. I couldn’t wait to see what he was going to do with his face next. I consider myself hugely privileged to have worked with him so many times and to have been directed by him. He was the ultimate ally. In life, art and politics. I trusted him absolutely. He was, above all things, a rare and unique human being and we shall not see his like again.

Members of the Harry Potter team have been sharing their thoughts on their friend Alan Rickman

Quote Message: Alan Rickman is undoubtedly one of the greatest actors I will ever work with. He is also, one of the loyalest and most supportive people I've ever met in the film industry. He was so encouraging of me both on set and in the years post-Potter. I'm pretty sure he came and saw everything I ever did on stage both in London and New York. He didn't have to do that. I know other people who've been friends with him for much much longer than I have and they all say "if you call Alan, it doesn't matter where in the world he is or how busy he is with what he's doing, he'll get back to you within a day". from Daniel Radcliffe
    Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson worked with Rickman on all eight of the Harry Potter films, which gave the then-child stars their shots to stardom.

Quote Message: I'm very sad to hear about Alan today. I feel so lucky to have worked and spent time with such a special man and actor. I'll really miss our conversations. RIP Alan. We love you from Emma Watson

Quote Message: I was at Leavesden Studios today when I heard the news. As I walked through the canteen I thought of Alan queuing up for his lunch with us mere mortals. I recalled the trailer in which he offered me some of the greatest advice I ever received about this mad profession we shared. Being back in those corridors made me remember a lot of things and I will treasure those memories all my life. He inspired my career more than he ever knew and I'll miss him. from Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom)

  16. Analysis: Oscar nominations

    Tim Masters

    Arts and Entertainment correspondent

Initial thoughts on this year's nominations:

    • For the second year running there are eight films up for best picture.
    • The beautiful-looking but brutal The Revenant, with best actor favourite Leonardo DiCaprio, leads the pack with 12 nods.
    • Serious issues come in the form of The Big Short (on the banking crisis) and Spotlight (Catholic scandal) rubs shoulders with action-packed crowd-pleasers Mad Max: Fury Road and sci-fi thriller The Martian.
    • Period dramas Brooklyn and Bridge of Spies are in, but 1950s lesbian love story Carol didn't make the cut.
    • There was also room for Lenny Abrahamson's powerful kidnap drama Room.
    • After last year's #Oscarssowhite backlash over the complete lack of recognition for non-white actors, the same has happened again this year.
    • There was nothing for Idris Elba, who got a Bafta nod last week for Beasts of No Nation, while NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton was denied a best picture nomination.
    • After being snubbed at the Baftas, British actress Charlotte Rampling will be celebrating her first ever best actress nod for the marital drama 45 Years.
    • And how's this for a comeback? Sylvester Stallone gets his first Oscar nomination since he was up for best actor in Rocky in 1977.
  17. Best original score

    • Bridge of Spies - Thomas Newman
    • Carol - Carter Burwell
    • The Hateful Eight - Ennio Morricone
    • Sicario - Johann Johannsson
    • Star Wars: The Force Awakens - John Williams
  18. Best film in a foreign language

    • Embrace of the Serpent - Colombia
    • Mustang - France
    • Son of Saul - Hungary
    • Theeb - Jordan
    • A War - Denmark
  19. Spielberg tops producing record

Steven Spielberg has set the record for the most best picture nominations for an individual producer with nine, following his latest nod for Cold War thriller Bridge of Spies.

Of those nominations, he's won twice - for Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List.
