Bombastic Donald Trump has vowed to make friends with Vladimir Putin because he 'hates Obama' on a grand tour of his 800-acre Scottish golf resort.

The US billionaire - who was sacked by NBC for branding Mexicans 'rapists' - brought his over-the-top charm to Britain as he claimed he now 'expects' to become President.

Wearing a red cap with the message 'make America great again', Mr Trump flew into his Turnberry resort in a private helicopter with the callsign G-TRMP.

The Republican party frontrunner addressed dozens of journalists as he claimed the "world would unite" if he took over the White House.

And he said the special relationship with Britain "would get better", adding: "My mother was born in Scotland. I think we would be very close.

"We would have such a great relationship with this part of the world and many other parts of the world.

"I think I'd get along very well with Vladimir Putin, I just think so.

"People say 'what do you mean?' I think I'd get along well with him. He hates Obama and Obama hates him, we have unbelievably bad relationships."

Mr Trump admitted he's only met David Cameron briefly but said: "I'm sure I'll get along with him just fine."

The speech comes days after Mr Trump's lawyer and spokesman apologised for claiming that 'by... definition, you can't rape your spouse'.

Michael Cohen later said he'd made an 'inarticulate comment - which I do not believe - and which I apologize for entirely'.

Recent polls have put Mr Trump ahead in the race to win the Republican nomination for America's vote in November next year.

If he wins the nomination he could end up fighting runaway Democratic nomination candidate Hillary Clinton for one of the most powerful jobs in the world.

However, he's also said he could run as an independent canddiate.

Mr Trump bought the historic South Ayrshire golf resort last year, and flew in today as it hosts the Women's British Open.

He's already clashed with the Scottish Government over plans for an offshore wind farm near another golf course he owns in Aberdeen.

He added the idea of a second Scottish independence vote is 'ridiculous', saying: "They went through it and it was turmoil and bedlam for so long.

"I would say that the winning team should be extremely upset if that is even thought about."
