British holidaymakers may have to pay up to £50 to travel to EU countries as the price of post-Brexit border controls, the home secretary said yesterday.

Passengers also face paying at least £5 to be fast-tracked through passport controls as border staff struggle to cope with the numbers arriving at airports.

Amber Rudd said that she couldn’t “rule out” British tourists and business people having to pay visa fees to enter France, Germany or other EU countries as part of any Brexit deal.

At present a visa to travel to the Schengen free movement area — which does not include the UK — costs non-EU adults €60, the equivalent of just over £50. Visas for children aged six to twelve cost €35, or about £30.
