Imports of goods to Australia rose by 1.3% month-over-month to a 3-month high of AUD 36.48 billion in January 2024. Purchases of consumption goods jumped 5.2% to AUD 11.69 billion, lifted by non-industrial transport equipment (17.2%), and textiles, clothing and footwear (2.1%). Also, imports of capital goods climbed 5.9% to AUD 9.10 billion, led by telecommunications equipment (30.3%), industrial transport equipment n.e.s. (13.1%), and capital goods n.e.s. (2.0%). Further, purchases of non-moneary gold surged 29.8% to AUD 814 million. Imports of goods to Australia jumped by 4.8% month-over-month to AUD 11.12 billion in December 2023. Purchases of consumption surged 4.7% to AUD 35.54 billion, lifted by non-industrial transport equipment (15.8%), textiles, clothing and footwear (14.9%), and consumption goods n.e.s. )4.6%). Also, imports of intermediate and other merchandise grew by 4.5%, driven by parts for transport equipment (36.7%), fuels and lubricants (5.1%), other parts for capital goods (4.2%), and processed industrial supplies n.e.s. (1.2%). Further, purchases of non-moneary gold gained 9.8% to AUD 627 million. By contrast, purchases of capital goods fell 1.0% to AUD 8.62 billion, due to industrial transport equipment n.e.s. (-16.4%) and telecommunications equipment (-7.9%).
